Parent Management Training
Parent Management Training (PMT) is an intervention used to treat children and adolescents with oppositional, aggressive, and/or antisocial behaviors. PMT involves teaching caregivers techniques to help their children improve behaviors and learn new skills. First, caregivers meet with the therapist alone for several sessions and are taught principles of behavior management, attending skills and discipline techniques. Next, caregivers and adolescents participate in sessions together and learn ways to improve their communication and problem-solving skills.
When working with parents of children ages 12 and younger, I utilize the techniques outlined in Defiant Children by Barkley, Edwards, and Robin (2013). When working with parents of children 13 and older, I utilize the techniques outlined in Defiant Teens by Barkley, Edwards, and Robin (2014).
Parenting Classes and Webinars
In order to serve more parents and families at one time, I often host parenting classes either virtually or in-person. These classes allow parents the opportunity to learn new skills, participate in group discussions, and ask questions.
Co-Parenting Tweens and Teens – This is a 6-week coparenting class in which parents will learn the effects of divorce and parent alienation on parents and teens, how to improve communication between coparents and best practices for transitions, discipline, and parent-child contact.
Check this page regularly for an updated list of current classes.
I also have several pre-recorded webinars available that can be viewed at anytime and at your own pace.
Raising Challenging Children is an 8-week webinar series in which parents learn ways to improve the parent-child relationship and increase their child’s compliance. This series is best suited for parents of children ages 2 to 10.
Raising Challenging Teens will be available Summers 2023. This series is best suited for parents of children ages 11 to 17.
Co-Parenting
In addition to coparenting classes, I am able to facilitate one-on-one coparenting sessions with either one or both parents to address concerns specific to your child, family, and/or coparenting difficulty.
Topics appropriate for coparenting sessions include:
Parent Consultation
Are you feeling overwhelmed with where to begin in helping your child overcome the challenges they are facing? Do you just have a parenting question or need guidance on how to best support your child in a specific situation? If so, a parenting consultation session may be just what you need! Unlike traditional therapy, where parent guidance is one aspect of the healing process, parenting consultations focus on enhancing parents’ skills and giving them concrete tools to solve problems. During consultation sessions, I will learn more about your child, your family, and the specific challenge being faced. I will then provide you with strategies to address the challenge. After the initial consultation session, we can determine if more sessions are needed. Consultation sessions cost $100/45-minute session and are not billable to insurance.
